This coastal garden was designed to create a lush, subtropical retreat while retaining a strong connection to its New Zealand coastal setting. The existing mature trees provide an established canopy and sense of enclosure, while layered planting introduces palms, bold architectural foliage, bromeliads, ferns, grasses and flowering subtropicals. River pebbles, bark mulch and restrained hard landscaping reinforce the relaxed coastal character. A key objective was to create a garden that feels immersive rather than ornamental—a sheltered, green environment where architecture, pathways and planting become part of one cohesive landscape. The finished garden has a distinctly New Zealand coastal-subtropical character: relaxed, textural and naturally integrated with the home.
